Based in LA, Eden Batki has long been taking pictures of her friends and her world. Over the past few years she has turned her lens to capture lesbians of all ages. Growing up with a gay mom, she got an inside look at lesbian life from a young age. The people she focuses on are artists, musicians, and athletes. Specifically, she hopes to broaden the image that much of the world has of lesbians. www.edenbatki.com

These photographs are of lesbians I met in Sao Paulo; they are musicians, artists, and activists.
Sao Paulo is a huge city - the largest I have ever been to, in fact - and this is a very small select group of women.

With the exception of Vange Leonel, a fairly famous musician, the women are all under 30 years old. I met them through my one friend, Elisa Gargiulo of the band Dominatrix, and we spent numerous nights drinking beer and playing pool. There was lots of laughing. Everyone was incredibly hospitable and took very good care of us.

I didn't get to see much of peoples' day-to-day lives since most of my time was spent hanging out at night. The clubs were incredibly fun. It was amazing to have such a mix of gay and straight people.

The best part about Brazil was the Samba music and how everyone knows how to dance. Everyone sings along with the songs - each is a standard. The small bars are packed
with all-female Samba bands.....Could it get any better?!

The best part was that our punk friends mixed well with this crowd. Everyone - all from different backgrounds - was dancing together.
