2. We're all a bit queer
--You also released a song with Chicks on Speed on this album. How did that come about?
Gene (G):
When Alex from Chicks came to DJ in Bangkok, we got to hang out with her. I sang with her - and she was DJ'ing - so we thought, why not doing something together? She's really sweet.
Bee (B):
And we've always loved Chicks on Speed, they are really amazing - and pioneering! We hung out a lot with Alex, went shopping in Bangkok together.
G:
We went like shopping for hours - she really likes shopping (laughs). She bought so many things (laughs). Then I spent one whole day writing songs by the pool.
B:
We just clicked. She was very interested in Bangkok designers, so I showed her what Bangkok designers were doing - and she loved it! She made me buy a lot of clothes as well (laughs).
--(laughs) You know, you each seem to have your own unique sense of style. Do you have any favorite designers?
G:
There are some great designers in Bangkok, and I tend to sort of take fashion and twist it.
OH (O):
None of us has any rules about putting together the outfits we have.
B:
Oh, but I love Vivenne Westwood. That's also because when I was young and punk it was really expensive, but now it's much cheaper than it used to be so I just love it. I think Vivienne Westwood is maybe the only designer that I like really. It's funny, a while back I went buy a guitar pedal. It was about $200, and I was like "Oh that's too expensive, I'm not gonna buy it". But 10 minutes later I went to the Vivienne Westwood shop, I saw a pair of trousers for about $300 and was like "Yeah, I've got to have them!" (laughs).
Simon(S):
I like DKNY, all that black stuff. And Calvin Klein.
O:
What surprised us coming to Tokyo is the fact that you can still see women in Kimono in the streets here. They're so beautiful, I found myself enraptured.
--I think one would look fabulous on you - you should wear one for a show!
O:
That's not a bad idea!

Actress, model, illustrator and bassist OH
--Your band is very queer friendly. Can I ask who is queer in the band?
O:
We are all a bit queer (laughs).
S:
(laughs). Ok, let's say: 1,2,3 (pointing to himself, Bee, and Gene).
--That's what we thought (laughs).
B:
Good guess! Good gaydar!
--Of course, we're all queer at TW!! So, do you hang out in the gay scene of Bangkok?
G:
Oh, god yes!
--What's it like?
G:
It's great! Very popular and quite mainstream.
S:
The music is very pop. Also, the people in Bangkok are more open-minded I think. Straight people are seen in the scene, too.
B:
There's not a lot of the real creative gay club-kid types like in Tokyo. They are a lot into the pop music thing in Bangkok.
--Right, because in Tokyo it's not very mixed, it's quite segregated. Straight people don't come that often.
G:
Yeah. If you're gay in Bangkok, you don't have any problem. You can also go to straight places too. That's cool.
--Do you have lesbian friends in Bangkok?
G:
Of course!
B:
Actually, OH played a lesbian character in a film!
O:
Yes. It's called The Iron Ladies 2 (original title Satree Lek, directed by Youngyooth Thongkonthun). It went quite far around the world and got quite big. It's a comedy about a volleyball team.
--The DVD is out in Japan as well, isn't it! Very cool. So what are lesbians like in Bangkok?
B:
The thing is that in Bangkok when it comes to gay rights, most of the gay men are not interested. Yet there's one group, Anjaree and it's all lesbians, but they fight for gay rights in general. They're very vocal, tackle issues and things.
--Interesting. How do lesbians look in Bangkok?
S:
Oh, they look really cool. Like with spiky hair.
B:
I hear that they're very fixed in their roles, you either have to be either butch or femme. Apparently they're really strict about it.
G:
A butch is a tom, and a femme is a dee.
B:
And everybody adheres to these pretty closely. You can't switch between the two.
S:
Lesbians have their own clubs as well.
--Men can't enter?
G:
Oh no they can. They're fine.
--Because in Japan, usually they can't.
B:
Oh really? But in London too, they have some clubs like that. No, in Bangkok it's open and mixed.
