3. The meanings behind "Gayboy"
Bassist OH
--Tonight you began your show with the song "Gayboy". Can you explain for us the meaning behind it?
B:
Yeah. There are basically three meanings to that. One is from a girl's point of view, saying that the straight girls want to be gay, because gay boys tend to have more fun. But then there's another meaning, which is like saying that the gay lifestyle is shallow, and they just care about Calvin Klein. The third meaning is like David Bowie. When I was young, David Bowie was like bisexual gay.
--Yeah, yeah. I remember.
B:
I thought, "Wow, he's really cool...and he's gay". And that was a great thing! And then in the eighties, he was like, "Oh I was never gay - that was a phase". I think that's really shit, so we wrote about that. Thus, there are three meanings to that song.
--Awesome. Especially the bit about David Bowie. I feel the same way! Also, in the song, you sing about a lot of gay towns in the world, including Shinjuku Nichome in Tokyo. Have you ever been there?
G:
Oh yeah! We went last night (laughs).
B:
I found it to be very quiet. It's not like the gay streets in London or Bangkok - those areas are busy every night. But Nichome seems very quiet.
--True. But maybe it's because you were there on a Wednesday. Over the weekends, and especially in summer, it's quite busy. In the summertime the streets are full of people.
B:
Oh, Ok. But gays in London, like even when it's snowing in winter, they're in their t-shirts outside (laughs).
G:
Yeah in Bangkok too, you know when you're in the gay area (laughs). Always busy.
--Right! Simon, you saw FUTON live in Bangkok, before joining the group. What was your impression of them at that time?
S:
I thought they were great. I had no intention of joining a band at that time, but then I saw them and I really felt they were great. And then they were looking for a drummer so Gene said to me, Why don't you join? So I accepted - I was really excited.
--And you, Gene, what was your first impression of Simon?
G:
Hmm, I never even thought he would really accept. But he was always really nice, sweet and kind. He's like a brother.
S:
We really get along well with each other. We just clicked, all of us.
--Yeah, you can feel it.
O:
Simon is really big. Famous. But he's very easy to work with.
S:
We all live along the same street in Bangkok, so it's like FUTON street (laughs).
