2. It all began as a golf tournament
Not many people in Japan know that the Dinah Shore Weekend itself grew out of a golf tournament. It all began when the American singer/actress Dinah Shore founded the Colgate Dinah Shore Golf Tournament, which was held in Rancho Mirage in the Palm Springs area. The tournament later changed its name to the Kraft-Nabisco Championship, but it still remains one of the top four most important competitions within the Ladies' Professional Golf Association (LPGA).
Originally, reference to the Dinah Shore meant no more than a golf tournament, but its crossover into becoming the Dinah Shore Weekend was made when, owing to the tremendous number of lesbians who came to watch and play in the event, independent lesbian event promoters decided to launch a party at the competition's opening.

What began as a one-night event has - over the course of its 20 years - developed into a 5-day extravaganza complete with pool parties, bands, and more. Currently, over 10,000 lesbian and bisexual women are known to gather at its venue. For this reason, hotels in the Palm Springs area are all packed to the rafters every year. Since it is not legally allowed for events to discriminate, men are also given entry to the premises. Anyone attending will spot the occasional straight couple or gay male celebrant reveling in the ocean of queer women.

Since 2006, the festivities split into two separate events due to discord between the founding organizers. Yet, there is no denying that - as a result of the competition between Girl Bar and Club Skirts - the quality of the celebration as a whole has gone through the roof. The 2008 events even blew last year's party out of the water.
Roughly speaking, the Girl Bar Dinah Shore tends to appeal to older women, while the Club Skirts Dinah Shore draws more celesbians and women from younger crowds.
