Sex and the City

2. Introducing the queer angles

Sex and the City centers on the lives of four women in their 30s and 40s, each determined in their hot pursuit for both career and love. Possibly owing to its many gay screenwriters, the show is best characterized by the humorous and frank manner in which the women casually discuss sex, and many fans have commented, "In conversation they talk just like gay men".

The creation of the program was headed by Darren Star, producer for a number of hit dramas including "Beverly Hill 90210" (1990) and "Melrose Place" (1992), along with Michael Patrick King, the director and screenwriter for the film production. Both are out gay men. It is only natural that their gay sensibilities and perspectives are found woven into their work, along with the rest of its magic.

Now, TW gives you a run-down of the queer connections held by each of the stars of Sex and the City.

● Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker)

The program's main character, Carrie is a columnist who writes about her experiences in love and sex. Her best friend is Stanford, a gay man who appears often in the show to counsel her on matters of the heart and more. Their frank exchanges feel downright campy with all the laugh-out-loud twists, jokes, and jabs thrown in. There are also plenty of scenes of party girl Carrie heading out to get down at gay events with him. It's been rumored that fans of Sarah Jessica Parker's character are yearning for gay best friends of their own. Also, in one episode, Carrie realistically faces some issues of her own when she falls for a bisexual man.

● Charlotte York (Kristin Davis)

Once an art dealer at a gallery, Charlotte - much like Carrie - has a gay best friend, Anthony. While Stanford is a mild-mannered and laid-back kind of guy, Anthony is vituperative and snobbish - meaning that the two are always at odds with each other. Their scraps and verbal exchanges are unabashedly gay in context - making the whole affair a sight to see. Also, in one of Season 2's more talked about episodes, Charlotte discovers herself drawn to the independent and uninhibited lifestyle of a power lesbian that she crosses paths with in New York.

●Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon)

Miranda is first and foremost an ace lawyer. Early on in the drama, she is mistaken for a lesbian by her co-workers and set up on a date with a woman. In the film, Carrie and Miranda are hilariously mistaken for girlfriends by their waitress at a restaurant brimming with couples on Valentine's Day.

Also, Cynthia Nixon has openly shared with the media and the public the fact that she is happily involved in a long-term relationship with her same-sex partner. Together they are raising the two children Cynthia and her ex-husband had before their divorce.

●Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall)

Chief executive at a public relations firm, Samantha Jones' powerful and uninhibited nature has made her reportedly the favorite character among gay men. Completely unconcerned with what others may think about what she does or how old she is, she enjoys life freely and to its fullest. Among the 4 female characters, she is said to be the most "gay" for her personality is punctuated with an array of "campy" elements, such as her razor-sharp tongue offset by wry humor, her revelations in explicit and candid conversation, and her fundamental affinity for anything flashy and gorgeous. Also, in the drama, Samantha's open mind and curiosity for uncharted sexual territory of her own lead her to get involved with a woman. In subsequent scenes, Samantha's uniquely styled and inspired commentary on lesbian sex makes out-of-this-world entertainment.

Also, the fashion-consciousness and keen sensibilities of all the show's leading men have been another famous draw for its fans. Sex and the City's stylist, Patricia Field, has been called the most famous stylist in the world - a title she has earned by her innovative and compelling wardrobe design, which is itself subject to much attention from fashion magazines and female fans around the world. Field had been styling for the drama series since its start, and early on she worked alongside her then-partner, Rebecca Weinberg. The couple was very open about their relationship as partner in work and life, and even appeared in credits as "Patricia Field" and "Rebecca Field".

Next, we'll be giving a full report on the Japan Premier event presented by Patricia Field!
