Daniela Sea's First J-media Interview

by Yuki Keiser April 2008

Daniela Sea

1. An icon unlike the rest

Actress and musician Daniela Sea has become known the world around - both for her role as the FTM character Moira/Max on The L Word, as well as for being one of two out lesbians among the program's regular cast.

[The other is Leisha Hailey (Alice), while Mia Kirshner (Jenny), Karina Lombard (Marina), and Laurel Holloman (Tina) are all out bisexuals.]

After the release of Season 3 here in Japan, Daniela Sea has been steadily gaining a Japanese fan base of her own. She has already reached icon status in the states, where her name is widely recognized within any dyke scene anywhere. Following her debut as an actress in 2006, she has performed brilliantly in film and television productions at the heart of queer culture, such as "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" director John Cameron Michael's latest film “Shortbus” (2006), director Jamie Babbit (of "But I'm a Cheerleader" fame)'s newest film “The Itty Bitty Titty Committee”, and The L Word. She has also garnered her fair share of extra attention for a hot, hot involvement with singer, Bitch. In just an instant, Daniela had found herself standing center-stage with the spotlight of the national media focused squarely on her. In addition to her exposure in mainstream and alternative newspapers and magazines across the US, her presence on the covers of lesbian magazines like Curve and Velvet Park, as well as gay magazines like Frontiers, is savory proof of the close-knit bond she shares with the queer community.

As her nickname, “Little Prince", on “Shortbus” suggests, Daniela possesses an androgynous, almost tomboyish, allure that has relentlessly captured the hearts of fans of all genders and sexual identities. Devoid of pretension, even in the face of her popularity, Daniela is well-liked for her affable manner - and genuinely adored by the media to boot. Her openness acts like a magnet drawing people in, and when she speaks her words reveal a depth in character that she has cultivated throughout her fascinating life.

TW speaks with Daniela Sea for her first interview ever to be published in Japan. Join us as she shares her thoughts on life with her gay father, growing up hippie, hitch-hiking in Eastern Europe, living as a man in India, and her experiences on “Shortbus”, “The Itty Bitty Titty Committee”, and The L Word.
