I visited The Abbey at the tail end of summer, so I was quite surprised to find the entrance snowed in and to see a huge Christmas tree waiting inside! Turns out I had happened upon the “Christmas in September” event. Every year customers bring wrapped presents to donate to a local children’s hospital. Despite news of the oncoming economic depression hanging like a thick fog over the city, an endless stream of people were coming in with presents to tuck under the tree, a sight that truly warmed my heart. Next to the tree, a Sexy Santa posed for photos with the party-goers. Overall, the vibe was light and joyful. For more information about this event and The Abbey, check out their official website via the link above. One of the musicians from an earlier performance got up and started dancing, and the manager smiled back coyly at the girl hitting on her. I felt giddy and elated -- it was a wonderful, uplifting West Hollywood night!

Earlier in the evening when my taxi let me off at Here, the driver had assured me that there was no need to book a return taxi as there would be plenty waiting in front of the club later on. He was right -- as I stepped out of The Abbey I could see a whole line of them stretching down the street. The Abbey is open for lunch as well, with a selection of "modern American comfort food" on the menu. If you find yourself strolling through West Hollywood at some point, I highly recommend stopping by and taking a seat out on the patio, where you can order a Caesar salad, pasta or their special lemonade and enjoy some people-watching.
