5.Dating a femme
-- You seem to like boyish women.
Yes, I love butch women. But, it’s so interesting, because when you say you like butch women, a lot of people think you mean “ugly”. But that’s not the case at all, you know! (laughs)
-- Yeah exactly (laughs). I wonder why it is that so many straight folks associate butch women with ugly women (laughs).
They think you’re talking about some hideous, snarling lesbian! And that’s not at all what I mean. There’s always that confusion. And then, I always try to explain to people, I don’t fall for butch women because they’re "the next best thing" to a man. I’m just really attracted to androgyny. I just feel like people who blur the lines of gender, it’s sexy. Not because they’re trying, but because that’s just who they are.
-- Yeah, totally. So have all your girlfriends been butch women?
Mostly, but one time I did go out with a very feminine woman. Portia de Rossi. She's married now to Ellen DeGeneres.
-- You went out with Portia de Rossi!
We just dated for a few months. And then one day we were standing in a store together, and we were both looking at lipsticks, and I turned to her and said, “I don’t think I’ve ever picked up a lipstick with a girlfriend before!” I think then we realized that we would just be friends.
-- In your experience as a very feminine lesbian, do you think it’s easier for feminine women to get dates in the lesbian scene?
To the contrary, most girls think that I’m actually straight, and that I’m playing around.
-- But that would mean you’ve spent a long time “playing around”!
Yeah! 18 years! I think it’s safe to assume now that I really mean it (laughs).
