THE L WORD JOYCE JANE LYNCH

6. Supporting lesbian film production

-- Power Up, based in LA, is currently the only nonprofit production company making lesbian films in the United States. What relationship do you have with them? I see you quite often at their events.

I'm very much a supporter. I give money and I volunteer. For example, I acted in two of their short films, Little Black Boots and Promptoversy, which was really good. I've also helped produce. Really, I love what they do. I love that they're making films and giving people a chance. And additionally, I love Stacy and Lisa as people.

-- What do you think Power Up has added to your life?

For one thing, it's afforded me the opportunity to produce. And the valuable experience of seeing how a film is made, because up until then I’d only been an actress, so I had never seen how a film was made. Moreover, there’s that whole spirit of everybody volunteering and everyone doing it together. When there's no money involved, something special happens to people; they’re willing to work harder. I don't know what it is, but it's almost as if we work harder and challenge each other even more because we're doing it for nothing. The reward is just so great.

-- I don’t know of any other nonprofit production company making lesbian films. Is this typical to LA?

Typical? Yes, I think so because I don't know where such an organization could exist other than LA. LA is unique in that way; there are tons of organizations for all these little subcultures. You can't find that in other parts of the country, except New York. One thing I especially like about Power Up is the fact that men are welcome to join as members. It may be focused on elevating the status of gay women in Hollywood, but it's not exclusive to just gay people. It's really about elevating all of us. Gay women. Gay men. Japanese people. People with wheelchairs. All of us.
