A most handsome woman comes this way in the Lebanese feature film, “Sukkar Banat (Caramel)”. Nadine Labaki, an established cutting-edge director in the Arabic music video industry, co-wrote, directed, and stars in this bittersweet romantic comedy, her debut feature film.

Owing to Caramel’s tremendous success, Labaki just recently made the top 5 in Arabian Business’s Power 100: The World's Most Powerful Arabs. When asked in an interview whether homosexuality is still a taboo today, Labaki specifically refers to the film’s tomboyish character Rima while responding, “Yes, definitely. In the film, Rima doesn’t live out her homosexuality. It is limited to what she feels when she shampoos the beautiful stranger [at the beauty salon]. Moreover, her friends notice but never mention it.”

【STORY】

レバノン・ベイルートの小さなヘアエステサロンに集う世代の異なる5人の女性たち。彼女たちはそれぞれ誰にも言えない秘密を抱えていた…。婚約者に過去を打ち明けられないイスラム教徒のニスリン。不倫の恋に振り回されるオーナーのラヤール。長い髪の美しい顧客に心惹かれるリマ。年を重ねる自分を受け入れられないジャマル。そして、ローズは年老いた姉を抱え、すでに自分の人生を諦めていた…。

”Caramel” brings audiences into the lives of five women from different generations who all converge at a small beauty salon in downtown Beirut. Each of these women has a secret that she cannot share: Nisrine, afraid to reveal her past to her fiancé; Layale, torn by her affair with a married man; Rima, enraptured by a client with long, beautiful hair; Jamale, who cannot accept growing older; and Rose, who must care for her elderly sister and has given up on life.
