Esquire magazine in Japan published a special 8 page article (in Japanese) on the queer scene in Berlin its April 24th issue. The article was written by Berlin-based writer and drag queen Tsuyoko Von Brandenburg and includes an introduction to seven key artists in Berlin gay culture and recommendations for Von Brandenburg's own favorite queer spots. This article, written as only Von Brandenburg could, is a must- see...and well worth keeping on hand! Below, we have a special note for you - sent from Tsuyoko Von Brandenburg herself! Hello all you tough girls & boys! I, the girl with the most glamorous drag queen name in the world, am a writer living in Berlin. The Germans themselves tell me I'm a walking example in shameless self-promotion. I admit, I would walk a thousand miles just to PR myself. And, here I am, bursting my way onto Tokyo Wrestling. Do you know why? Well, I just wanted to let you know that I headed an 8-page spread on gay culture in Berlin for the April 24th issue of the Japanese Esquire. I think it's wonderful that a non-gay general readership magazine like Japan's Esquire has moved to include gay culture in its pages. I myself became aware of how revolutionary this is as I was interviewing gay people in Berlin. The very handsome product designer, Hermann Weizenegger, told me, "I usually don't like to focus too much on the fact that I’m gay when talking about my work, but I'm impressed with what Esquire is trying to do with this article. I’ll certainly give an interview." People in Berlin know quite well that Japan as a country has not scored as much success with its gay movement - at least compared to Germany, where an out gay mayor has already been elected in Berlin and numerous gay and lesbian rights, including same-sex marriages, have already been assured and recognized by a majority of citizens. The story on “Gay Culture in Berlin” opens with a picture of Germany’s very first gay people's demonstration in 1973. (See black & white photo above) Also, featured in the article, are 7 key artists from within Berlin's gay cultural scene: Plus, seeing how I have lived in Berlin for the past 20 years, I could recommend with full confidence six queer spots: a cinema with a day for gay films, a restaurant, a café, a gay museum, a sausage stand and a bookstore for gay people. The article, however, concludes in quite an unexpected manner. I wonder what you would think! I welcome you to take a look, and hope that the article conveys even just a fraction of the depth of Berlin, a city shaped by its minorities.
