Gianna Nannini

Hello everyone, chief editor Yuki here!
I wanted to give a bit more info on Gianna Nannini to follow up on my last post.

Italian singer-songwriter Gianna Nannini first rocketed to fame throughout Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Europe in the 1980s with hits that regularly rocked the Top 10 charts and sent album sales soaring past the one million mark. When I was a teenager living in Switzerland, her songs could always be heard on the radio. In 1990, she and another renowned Italian artist were tapped to perform the Official Song of FIFA World Cup. In 2006 her album "Grazie" became a top seller and the single "Sei nell'anima" scored the Number One spot on Italy's Hit Parade. She is to Italy what Yumi Matsutoya is to Japan. So it's nothing less that tremendous that someone of that caliber also has publicly come out as queer!

Gianna Nannini

Though the internationally adored Nannini is officially out as a bisexual, dyke women generally tend to see her as a lesbian owing to her own dykey flair.

When I saw her at the restaurant, she was around 50 and looking hot - as well as distinctly 'rock'. The somewhat tomboy-ish woman accompanying Nannini looked around 25 or 26 and had a fresh-looking, suave appeal to her. This was a few years back but my co-worker had told me that she often saw Nannini at NOBU with female company. I wasn't sure if they were a couple, but I was thrilled to see two fashionable queer women dining in NOBU's stylish ambiance; they represented all that is hip about belonging to the power lesbian stream in Milan!

Gianna Nannini

Incidentally, I'd like to add, if you ever have the chance to visit Milan, I highly recommend visiting NOBU. The fusion of Western and Japanese culinary styles makes for exquisite flavor, and the interior design to both the lounge on the 1st floor and the Sushi bar and the restaurant on the 2nd floor is breath-taking!

※The photograph at the top of this post is from the cover of "Vanity Fair", a fashion magazine known around the world for its feature portraits by the lesbian photographer, Annie Leibovitz. In this same issue, Leibovitz states in an interview, "I'm sick of people asking about my sexuality. I usually just tell them whatever I feel like saying at that moment." Looking to other sources one finds that, in an interview with a gay Italian web site, she identifies herself as bisexual--while in the Italian newspaper "Corriere della Sera", she also flatly refers to herself as "polysexual".
