Emilie Jouvet
※Emilie Jouvet in Paris’s gay area, Le Marais.

Hello everyone, chief editor Yuki here!

I've just come back from Europe, and Paris!

Over the last few years, as the underground queer scene in Paris has progressively evolved, cutting-edge artists and activists have congregated in the city, making it an exceptionally hot place for anything queer!

During my visit, I interviewed Emilie Jouvet, a French photographer and filmmaker who belongs to the queer feminist cultural stream. Her photographic and film work, consisting of intimate portraits of current and former girlfriends and queer friends, is infused with a very personal and political depth as it portrays their movements over gender boundaries.

Emilie’s work was recently shown at a photo exhibition in Berlin along with that of photographer Nan Goldin, famous for delving into transgender and sexuality, photographer and director Bruce La Bruce, renowned for his underground gay pornographic art and cult movies, amongst others. Emilie is without a doubt now one of France’s coolest rising artists.

In addition, she has contributed directly to the upsurge in the queer scene by joining forces with friends to form “Les très très méchantes filles” (“The very, very bad girls”) and “Femme menace” (“The Femme Menace”), cleverly off-center lesbian groups that organize highly artistic queer events.

For so long I'd been wanting to meet Emilie - a tough and creative woman boldly at the fore of Paris’s queer underground scene - that I was really thrilled arriving in Paris! She was very charming and cool, just as I imagined, and as we talked she shared with me information on the concepts behind her work, the underground scene in Paris and her favorite spots.

I’ll be posting my long interview with Emilie, along with some of her work, in the “Articles” section later on, but in the meantime - please do check out her website! You will find amazing work with hot butches and lovely femmes!!
