Hi everybody, chief editor Yuki here!
Recently, I was approached by folks from NHK’s LGBT website Niji-Iro (Japanese) for an interview and, since it was just posted, I thought I'd give a little personal background on it here.
Niji-Iro's editor contacted me about the interview earlier this year in January. Our conversation was interesting for me because most of the questions I usually get in interviews tend to focus on the 'lesbian web magazine' aspect of my experience, but this time around the interviewer showed a lot of interest in learning about the general process of setting up online Japanese media.
Following its official launch in June 2007, TokyoWrestling had been active for a year and a half at the time of the interview. I've never given much information on the website about personal background behind the start of TokyoWrestling, so this interview was a great opportunity for me to reflect. I would like to thank the Niji-Iro team for that.
We talked about the history of Tokyo Wrestling at a café in Shibuya and conversation brought many memories back to me. I became nostalgic recalling how excited I felt when I first discovered lesbian culture, or when I first went to the States on an assignment, and how thrilled I was when conducting my first interview ever.
At a time when I thought that few lesbians existed in the world, I still clearly remember how blown away I was when I first learned that, not only are there lesbians, but a very cool and edgy lesbian culture already exists out there. This realization was a very inspiring experience for me. Here at TW, I'll be doing all I can to share as much insight as possible with readers. And we're always working on fresh ideas, so be sure to look forward to coming additions!
